BET planning tribute to Aaliyah next month

BET announced in a tweet Wednesday night that a tribute to fallen Detroit star Aailyah is in the works and will air on the cable channel next month.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Aaliyah's death; the rising R&B singer-movie star was killed in a plane crash on August 25, 2001 in the Bahamas after a music video shoot.

At the time of her death, Aaliyah had just released her third album and had completed production on "Queen of the Damned" based on the Anne Rice novel. She had been in talks to star in an updated version of the 1976 girl-group flick "Sparkle" -- which is now nearing production here in Metro Detroit with a new cast.

And, as 411Mania.com points out, that's not the only thing Aaliyah had planned during those days.

411Mania: Perhaps the strangest collaboration that we almost got was one between the late AALIYAH and NINE INCH NAILS, well TRENT REZNOR at least. Aaliyah was a huge Nine Inch Nails fan and had asked Reznor to collaborate on a song with her on what would become her last album, Aaliyah. There was some discussion, but scheduling conflicts prevent Reznor from the collaboration. In August 2001, the collaboration was prevented from ever happening as Aaliyah died in a plane crash. Like others taken too soon, Aaliyah's career seemed limitless at that point as she was supremely talented and naturally beautiful.

BET did not give an airdate or any other details for their Aaliyah tribute.
