Kanye, Jay-Z Album Could Drop July 4

Earlier this month, The Source wrote that Jay-Z and Kanye West’s collaboration, Watch The Throne, may make its debut July 4 on Def Jam. Originally slated to drop in January 2012, the initial release will most likely only be digital to avoid leakage, according to AllHipHop.com.

Lady Gaga announces next single?

Lady Gaga is one of the biggest superstars in the world. But speaking to her only briefly during this rare interview, she evades her larger-than-life image with affable charm, self-deprecating humor (take that, so-called penis) and a down-to-earth demeanor. She’s sweet, perverted, articulate and talkative. And she can’t stop gushing about how much her fans mean to her – and when I have to cut her off to get a few last minute questions in, she doesn’t pull a diva trip. She’s cordial as can be. “I could talk to you forever, you’re so cute,” she says, almost in baby goo-goo, ga-ga talk.

Point is, Gaga doesn’t sound like someone who just scored the best first-week sales of the year so far with Born This Way, her opus that seems to position her as the Mother Teresa of music. Since we last spoke, nearly two years ago when “Just Dance” was charting, she was barely a blip on the pop scene. How quickly things can change.

This time, Gaga spoke about inspiring young gay people, why she cried for a week straight, what she’d do with an Ann Coulter-like kid and the legacy she wants to leave.

We have lots more to talk about this time than your love for Italian sausages.
(Laughs) I love Italian sausages … as much as I love my own.

Don’t take this the wrong way, but as a fashion icon I have to ask: What are you wearing?
I’m actually in a black bra and underwear. That’s it. The top one is lace and the bottom one is just plain and silky. This is my daywear. I’m walking around my hotel room and I’m going to yoga soon, and I probably won’t change. (Laughs)

Beyonce Album Sales Are a 'Vindication,' Columbia Says

After reports of dissatisfaction, panic and other pre-release drama, executives at Columbia Records are feeling vindicated by the positive early returns for Beyonce's new album, "4."

"All the speculation that gets around is frustrating when it's just not true," Columbia/Epic Label Group Chairman Rob Stringer tells Billboard.biz. "The story about us being unhappy with the record and stuff is just not true. There's never been any doubt or conversations about moving the record or changing it... Those conversations never existed. We're really, really happy with it."

Lil B’s I’m Gay Is A Real Album, Out Now

It’s now been six weeks since Lil B dropped the Bitch Mob, which is like a thousand years in Based World. This time last year we were getting rare and legendary musical gifts from B on a nearly daily basis. The Based God works in mysterious ways. Just as a few of his devotees (namely me) were turning restless, last night his controversial I’m Gay dropped on iTunes, unexpectedly like bird shit.

The record’s title has served as such a talking point that it was easy to forget that there was an actual album behind it. In fact for a while it seemed entirely possible that it might’ve suffered the fate of the much lamented lost album Black Ken. But if you divorce I’m Gay from the controversy of its title (which may never happen because controversy is more popular than music these days) you can process it as just another Lil B album, a mature effort of the Angels Exodus and Illusions of Grandeur lineage. Sample-driven boom bap production (okay one of the samples is a Goo Goo Dolls sample, but still), personal, sociopolitcally charged, traditional and mostly lucid rhymes. Very few mentions of swag or pretty bitches or tiny jeans. In fact, he doesn’t even talk of his gayness (or straightness) once on the album. But maybe that was his plan all along—shock the world the title, only to have them come and witness his straightforward serious rap shit. Sample album track “I Hate Myself,” below, then buy I’m Gay on iTunes.

Evanescence say new song will "smack you right in the face"

Evanescence vocalist Amy Lee has revealed that the band's upcoming new album is "the heaviest record we've ever done".

Speaking to MTV, the vocalist opened up about the follow-up to 2006's The Open Door, which is due for release in October.

"We're having a great time making it," said Amy. "It's totally fun. We're just going for it."

Chatting about the band's first new single - which is as yet un-named - Amy explained: "It's really different for us. It doesn't sound like any Evanescence track you've heard before. It's heavy, but the melodies and stuff, I feel like I just did what I wanted.

"I just literally sang what I wanted to sing, because it was fun and it kind of made me smile, and that ended up being the really fun, cool, catchy thing that got everybody hooked on it," she says. "It also just smacks you right in the face and it's heavy and it's great!"

Katy Perry Nears Michael Jackson No. 1s Record

To say that Katy Perry has been on a roll lately would be a grand understatement. But now, the star is nearing a feat only previously achieved by the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

On the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, Perry's latest single from her "Teenage Dream" album, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," flies 31-4. As Gary Trust notes in today's Chart Beat column, if it hits No. 1 on the Hot 100, Perry will become just the second act -- and first woman -- to score five No. 1s from one album in the chart' 52-year history, as "California Gurls," the title cut, "Firework" and "E.T." all previously reigned.

Only Michael Jackson, with his 1987 set "Bad," has so far collected five Hot 100 No. 1s from one album release. "Bad" spawned the No. 1s "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," the title track, "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man in the Mirror" and "Dirty Diana."

Check Billboard.com next Wednesday (June 29) for highlights of next week's Hot 100, to be released in full in the Billboard.com charts menu the following day.

In other impressive and unprecedented Perry chart news, she was already the only artist with four 4-million-selling downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan. As of this week, Perry pulls further ahead of the pack as the only artist with a whopping five.

"E.T.," which topped the Hot 100 for five weeks beginning April 9, surpasses the 4-million mark in download sales, according to SoundScan (4.06 million). Perry is now the only act to have five songs sell more than 4-million each. (Lady Gaga is next with three 4-million-sellers).

She previously hit the 4-million mark with "Hot N Cold" (4.91 million), "Firework" (4.53 million), "I Kissed a Girl" (4.07 million) and "California Gurls" (4.88 million).

More evidence of Perry's power? Adding to the pileup of her staggering sales and chart statistics, "E.T." became the top-selling download of 2011 as of the week ending May 1, when it overtook Cee Lo Green's "Forget You (F**k You)."

Lil Wayne Turns Down Recording With Justin Bieber

Lil Wayne has Justin Bieber's best interest at heart. In fact, Wayne is such a good mentor to Biebs that he refuses to work with the teenage sensation in an effort to keep his untainted poster boy image squeaky clean.

For his part, Bieber has long been affiliated with the Young Money camp. Justin is close friends with YM member Lil Twist and just this past year was spotted out around town sporting the signature YMCMB sweatshirt leading many to believe he was the latest act to sign with the house of hits.

In his candid interview with XXL magazine Wayne elaborates on his relationship with the teenager and why he won't lace Mr. Bieber with a few of those platinum Carter bars.

"That's my little homie now," Wayne told reporter Shaheem Reid. "He texts me every night asking me to do [his] d-mn song. That's my n-gga, but I can't do it. Like I said, I don't want to f--k his sh-t up."

While Justin Bieber might not exactly be on top of Wayne's wish list another Justin is a collaboration the Cash Money rapper is looking to lock in before handing in his Carter IV album.

"But like I said, I want to work with Justin Timberlake" Wayne continued. "That boy got a voice; that boy can sing. He needs to come back right there on Tha Carter IV."

Gwen Stefani: "We are working on new material."

Singer Gwen Stefani said her band No Doubt will be working on more material but it's not a reunion as they never split.

The 41-year-old star has worked on her own solo career over the past few years but said she still has room for her band No Doubt, with a new album rumoured to be on the cards later this year.

She said to UK's Stylist magazine: 'It was never a break-up. It was always going to happen. We never stopped for all those years, but after Rock Steady [their fifth album], everybody was ready for a little time off.'

The star added that her solo career happened by chance after one single did well.

She said: 'It was more about making a dance record, I didn't even think of it as a solo opportunity. It was more of a creative project. I wasn't even going to tour but it was so amazing, how can you resist?'

Ke$ha talks Glastonbury, Britney, Lady Gaga comparisons, her next album and more

Whiskey-loving, party-starting pop-rapper Ke$ha is swapping the LA club scene this weekend for the muddy fields of Glastonbury. We caught up with the TiK ToK singer to find out what she has in store for festival goers, as well as her plans for her next album and why she’s collecting fan’s teeth.

You’re about to take the stage at Glastonbury. How are you feeling about performing at such an iconic festival?

I’m so excited about Glastonbury! It’s always epitomised success in my mind. It’s really exciting. I’ve wanted to play it for ages.

Considering it's traditionally been a rock and indie festival, do you think the fact that more dance and pop acts are performing means the genres are being taken more seriously these days?

I’d never really thought of it like that but perhaps, and I love that because writing a pop song that can be successful all over the world in countries that don’t even speak English and connect to people. I have respect for people who can write amazing pop songs in the same way that I have respect for somebody who can write incredible indie music and rock’n’roll. I think there’s a craft to writing all different kinds of music.

Michael Jackson's "Thriller"started out as a very different song called "Starlight"

The title track on Michael Jackson’s hit album “Thriller” began life as a very different song - called “Starlight.” Jackson and producer Quincy Jones intended for the song to be part of a larger concept album about Jackson’s musical maturity. Columbia Records executives worry for Beyonce

Columbia Records executives fear Beyoncé's new album, "4," could be a dud after she refused to return to the studio to re-record new tracks, sources say.

"They're very nervous about Beyoncé's new record," an industry insider told us. "It doesn't have the hit songs that her fans are used to. They asked her to make changes, but she said no."

Bracing for the worst, Columbia suits are strategizing in case of slower sales and have had "quiet discussions" about the reunion of Destiny's Child.

"Beyoncé's career has stalled a bit," a source told us. "Columbia seems to think they can get some mileage out of a comeback record with all of the girls." Another source tells us Destiny's Child could start recording together as early as October, with a suggested album title "Family Reunion."

But Kelly Rowland might not be eager to join forces again. Our source said, "She has her own solo career now, why would she want to be singing back up for Beyoncé?"

A Columbia rep told us, "All I know is that the record came in . . . Nothing was ever discussed to change it." Beyoncé's rep said, "All of this is completely untrue. All of it." Rowland's rep didn't get back to us.

After keeping fans waiting, J. Cole has finally revealed the title and release date for his debut album.

Cole World: The Sideline Story will be released on September 27 via Roc Nation/Sony Music. The North Carolina rapper made the announcement on Twitter. Rap-Up.com has confirmed the title and release date with his label rep.

Cole hopes to drop another mixtape ahead of the project’s release and sees Grammys in the future. “I’m tryna win that Grammy, tryna pull some Lauryn Hill shit,” he previously said.

New music to be released by the late Selena

In an excerpt from an interview with Selena's father Abraham Quintanilla, Los Angeles Times writer Enrique Lopetegui asks him about what we can expect from the archives of Selena in the approaching future.

"While most of Selena’s best-known music belongs to and was re-released by EMI, her dad has a juicy surprise up his sleeve.

'I own five pre-EMI masters of Selena,' Quintanilla said. 'As we’re speaking, we selected 10 songs and we’re taking the vocals out of the original recordings and A.B. [Quintanilla III, Selena's brother and former bandmember] is doing new music, bringing it up to date. We already finished one, and it sounds as if Selena had recorded it this morning.'

The vocal tracks were recorded when Selena was 14, 15, and 16, and the “new” album should be released later this year or in early 2012.

'Maybe March 2012?' I ask.

'Maybe,' said Quintanilla. 'But first things first: We need to finish those remaining nine songs. Then we’ll see.'

With or without these new songs, Selena’s legacy is secure: She sold over 21 million albums and had seven number-one hits. Her posthumous album, Dreaming of You, debuted at #1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 — outdone only by Michael Jackson’s HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I. Not bad for a Lake Jackson-born, Corpus Christi-raised girl who never once felt superior to her fans."

Clarence Clemons dies of complications from stroke

He was the spirit of the E Street Band, and the oaken staff that Bruce Springsteen leaned on.

Clarence Clemons — the Big Man with the big horn — died yesterday of complications from a stroke he suffered last weekend. He was 69.

“Clarence lived a wonderful life,” Bruce Springsteen said in a statement last night. “He carried within him a love of people that made them love him. He created a wondrous and extended family. He loved the saxophone, loved our fans and gave everything he had every night he stepped on stage.”

News of Clemons’ death was first reported last night on nj.com, The Star-Ledger’s real-time news website.

“He was the kahuna of surf and soul and a man that had love in his heart and, always, a smile on his face. He was my brother — my musical brother,” said original E Street Band drummer Vini “Mad Dog” Lopez.

Lopez last saw Clemons when he guested at an E Street Band show in Philadelphia, in 2009. “I was in the dressing room with him, and we were laughing and talking about golfing,” said Lopez.

A member from New Kids on the Block, Joe McIntyre. And a member from New Edition, Bobby Brown. They're all going to form a boy band, each, from the most talented guys in America that I've scouted, and then they'll go head-to-head in a competition to see who the best band is, so it's bragging rights for the guy in the group, for sure." Well, almost: Bass admits that Brown hasn't officially signed on yet. "I think Bobby will do it," Bass says. "I think he'd love it."

Rebecca Black Legal Battle: How Much Money Is at Stake?

Rebecca Black’s video for “Friday” is no longer available on the site that made her a viral sensation in March. Earlier this week, the video was made available on Youtube with a $2.99 rental fee, and later removed altogether.

The video and song are at the center of a three-way legal battle among Black’s lawyers, the producers who say they wrote the song, and the studio Black’s parents hired to record it.

So how much money is at stake?

As soon as she gets done with the Glee tour, her focus will be solely on her solo album for the month of July. “I won’t have anything I’m working on until after the tour is over,” Rivera told EW when we caught up with her, “so July 4th, when I get back home in L.A., is when I’ll hunker down and spend that whole month hammering out the details and the creative process of that. I’m really excited about that.”

Hilary Duff Will Start Recording New Album This Summer

On what she thinks her new music will sound like:

"It's hard to say until I get in the studio with a producer and a writer that I'm in love with and feel like really gets me. A pop/rock dance sound is where I want to go because it's what I like. And strong hooks, I think that's the most important -- songs that get stuck in people's heads and that are catchy and make you feel good."

On what she's looking forward to most this summer:

"Travel. We always make big travel plans over summer. I don't know where we're going yet. We just got back from Hawaii, which was great, but that was like a quick trip. He's never been to Italy before, so I think we might want to go there. And I'm going to start making my record -- that's going to happen like sooner or later. I won't [be going to Pittsburgh]. I got plenty of Pittsburgh this year. I had a good time, the people were really nice and just crazy about hockey, but no. I'm looking for a place a little sunnier."
