New music to be released by the late Selena

In an excerpt from an interview with Selena's father Abraham Quintanilla, Los Angeles Times writer Enrique Lopetegui asks him about what we can expect from the archives of Selena in the approaching future.

"While most of Selena’s best-known music belongs to and was re-released by EMI, her dad has a juicy surprise up his sleeve.

'I own five pre-EMI masters of Selena,' Quintanilla said. 'As we’re speaking, we selected 10 songs and we’re taking the vocals out of the original recordings and A.B. [Quintanilla III, Selena's brother and former bandmember] is doing new music, bringing it up to date. We already finished one, and it sounds as if Selena had recorded it this morning.'

The vocal tracks were recorded when Selena was 14, 15, and 16, and the “new” album should be released later this year or in early 2012.

'Maybe March 2012?' I ask.

'Maybe,' said Quintanilla. 'But first things first: We need to finish those remaining nine songs. Then we’ll see.'

With or without these new songs, Selena’s legacy is secure: She sold over 21 million albums and had seven number-one hits. Her posthumous album, Dreaming of You, debuted at #1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 — outdone only by Michael Jackson’s HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I. Not bad for a Lake Jackson-born, Corpus Christi-raised girl who never once felt superior to her fans."
